The Liberty microservices team, based in IBM Hursley in the UK, recently decided to include some ASCII art in Game On!. From there, it was but a short step to driving a remote-controlled car around the floor of the latest WebSphere User Group meeting at IBM Southbank, taking pictures with a Raspberry Pi camera to render as ASCII art. Game On!Game On! is both a sample microservices application and throwback text adventure brought to you by the WASdev team at IBM. It aims to enable exploration of microservice architectures from two points of view:
Polyglot to the RescueText is one way to display information to the user but we wanted to add images. Game On! is text-based, though, and doesn’t support images. So we thought it would be cool if we could display some ASCII art and, even better, provide a way for images to be converted on-the-fly. Our initial approach was to create a new room for Game On! which would display some ASCII art pictures (we imaginatively titled this the picture room). This would be hosted in its own Docker container and it would register with the Game On! map service at startup. The simple Java room example provided a good starting point. It shows all the skeleton code needed to connect a room to Game On! and how to handle things like security and creating the correct JSON data structures. Great, we were up and running with a new Game On! room in about 10 minutes (after a few minor tweaks to the Java code, such as setting the correct developer API key). Now all we needed was a Java library to do the image-to-ASCII conversion for us and we would be good to go. Unfortunately, this wasn’t as easy as it first sounded because there isn’t a readily available library for Java. The library that a lot of people use is GraphicsMagick but that is native code. A little bit of searching revealed that there exists a Node.js module called

Flora And Fauna Of The Discworld Jpeg Download Torrent SoftwareWe configured a Docker container to run a Node.js instance with the So now we have a nice polyglot environment and, because IBM Bluemix supports both Node.js and Liberty runtimes, there won’t be a problem when we deploy this to the cloud in the future. Smile PleaseOnce we had static images, we immediately wanted to use a camera to capture live pictures; something altogether much more interesting (oh look, new shiny!). We had a camera in the office that plugged into a Raspberry Pi; Liberty is such a lighweight application server that it happily runs on a Pi. So we built another Game On! room (again based on the Java simple room template) but moved it be running on the Pi: we called this the camera room (you can tell we’re in development and not marketing…). Here is a picture showing the room running in Game On! and the camera taking a picture of one of the team (note the obligatory coffee pot in the foreground, this was a bit of a late night coding session in the office). This was interesting as it was starting to not only show how to communicate with devices (think Internet of Things) but also what happens when more than one person tries to control the same physical device. The increasing number of microservice interactions between Game On!, node, and the Pi also nicely serves to illustrate the fact that increased remote calls is something that is part of a microservices environment. The good news is that Game On! contains plenty of code showing how to do things like re-establishing WebSocket connections, handling timeouts, and a whole plethora of things that can happen when one service tries to call another. Backseat Drivers!Having got the camera working, always getting the same image (albeit a live one instead of a static one) soon got a little bit boring. We needed a way to move the camera around so that it could take different pictures. Enter the Liberty Car. For those that don’t know, the Liberty Car is a remote-controlled car that is controlled using a Liberty instance running on a Pi, which is housed within the car. Hhhmmm, so that would be something that can be moved using a Pi…perfect! We removed the old Pi that was in the car and replaced it with the one running our Game On camera room: One of the key tenets of microservices is the separation of concern between services and how each one should have a clearly defined responsibility. Rather than add functionality to the camera room, we added another room to control the car (car room). To that end, we further decomposed the existing camera room into a camera service that would let you take a picture and could be accessed independently from Game On. Earlier, I mentioned how increased numbers of remote calls, and their associated overheads, are one of the costs of using a microservices architecture. The sample flows below show just how quickly these calls start to add up, and why you need to be defining your API up front: think Test Driven Development but with APIs and Swagger. Taking a picture: Driving the car: Re-using the camera service: The Final PictureAt a high level, this is how we had all the services talking to each other: This architecture shows:

This book marks the return to Terry Pratchetts Discworld.
Let me explain - in the early days of my book collecting (when it was only half the monster it is today) I followed the book of Terry Pratchett and the annals of Discworld, after all it seems like it was all my friends were reading, plus it did something that few others did. They were humorous fantasy novels which made you laugh with not at the stories. Anyway I digress, for me Discworld and Josh Kirby are so interwound I would know think..more
Reading this, I had 'the feels'.
And the last page only made it worse! It was just a description of the author and his work for crying out loud! .. Which is exactly what I did! Crying. Out loud. Aaaaanywaaaaaay. The book. As a fan of the Discworld I had to have an atlas of course. There are a lot of compendium books out there but this newest one seems to be the only one showing all of Discworld so far. The book is made out to be like a geopgraphy/history book. It therefore has the typical cream-..more
I've enjoyed most of the discworld spinoffs, the diaries had great backgrounds to the various groups on the guild, the maps were funny and gave a good layout for some of the books and Nanny Oggs cook book is special in so many weird ways.
This was good but not a patch on some of my old favourites. For an atlas there are very few good maps. The big foldout one is reasonably good but not a patch on the recent Ankh Morpork one and in the body of the book the maps are rare and vague at best. More de..more
Written as a true book in the world of Discworld and with enough Pratchett-isms that this was a great addition to the world of the Disc. Also has a pretty awesome atlas
An updated Discworld map, which is huge, beautifully illustrated and double sided - together with a very detailed guide to all the lands of the Disc. This book doesn't just repeat the jokes from the novels (although some references are indeed made), it adds a lot of new material about all locations on the Discworld, and even gives details about some places never actually visited in the books (and some that aren't even mentioned!) There is a lot of sly humour, some wonderful illustrations, and so..more

A fab guide to the Discworld, lots of fun to read. The first time I ever visited the Discworld Emporium, they were on the phone to Sir Terry, talking about the location of Twoshirts for this atlas. So great to finally see the finished product.

This is exactly the book I needed, namely a book that made me grin out loud almost every page. Sometimes a girl needs some uncontrollable sheer in her life :D. Especially now I decided to be happy again and not grave.
If the overtly colonial 'King Solomon's Mines' was my secret porn (as I wrote recently), then Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is my opium - and one I'm open and honest about.
The series of books was unique for a number of reasons, not least being that you could take any book in any order and enjoy it without having to know the back history of any of the multiple characters which appear, sometimes as main characters, sometimes as quick cameos, sometimes not at all. For me, the collection was the..more
Highly entertaining, especially trying to guess which real country inspired the one you're reading about. My personal favorite is Fourecks with their surfing religion ?
When I was young and reading the Discworld books, Ankh Morpork just seemed like this crazy, weird and dirty city. Gradually it became very real, very alive, until I moved to to live in the UK and realized that it's indeed, inspired by London. And then the whole picture became clear and i felt like I rediscovered his books. It's bee..more
3.5-4 stars.
This atlas is beautiful, the book itself and the illustrations make it a great add to the Discworld series. Every region, country, land is depicted in there; cultures, geography, populations,. you can find a lot of information about each of them. It's more the kind of book handy while reading the series, rather than reading it in one go. I still did it though.
Beautifully whimsical yet full of purpose - much like any Pratchett book! The illustrations were amazing too. Would definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys the Discworld series particularly if, like me, you honestly have no idea where anything is in relation to anything else half the time!

Good overview and a cool map but it could have benefited from more time spent on it to buff it up. The last page of the book has the reason why it wasn't done and it did unexpected things to my tear-glands.

What’s funny as small jokes in a narrative just become a bit of a slog when stuck together like this. Beautifully presented though.
If you want to know in-depth about the different countries of the Discworld, then this book is for you!

Round and round the Discworld goes…
If there is an error in this book, is having it called “atlas” where, to any Discworld enthusiast, the reading experience is a trip down memory lane much alike to the browsing of a family photo album. Every page frames an element (be it a character, or a scene, or a witty description) that will take back the “experienced” reader to the book in reference: an extremely elegant and colorful way to celebrate the long book collection and remember its witty architect..more
A beautiful companion piece to the late, great, Terry Pratchett's Discworld Series, this Atlas was read with twinges of sadness and mirth as I pondered about what Discworld was becoming, and what it could have been, before Sir Terry passed away last year. Jun 03, 2016Faye rated it really liked it

I put down this book with such a warm feeling in my heart; it is a credit to the world that Pratchett built that so many of the fans wanted a book like this. It is full of all those tiny obsessive details that only a really dedicated fan would delight in reading. I am in awe of the time and effort that have gone into making this book. The attention to detail is just so incredible. The map alone that comes with it is worth paying the full price for. It is so perfect I want to fr..more

At the start:
At the end: This book is a brilliant addition to the Discworld collection; it's absolutely stunning, and gives plenty of details on the areas of the Disc that are mentioned in passing, or haven't been visited in a while, with an update as to what's going on at the moment. Two happy afternoons were spent with the map open on the floor, one finger holding the page with the map references, happily putting A level Further Maths to use with the polar coordinates, before getting to the en..more
The shelves of our holiday home in October included the maps of Discworld and Ankh-Morpork, and although I passed an enjoyable hour or two with them I decided it wouldn't be worth buying them, because I don't know enough about either place - a latecomer to Discworld, there are some volumes I have only read once or twice, and there is a lot I don't remember. What I needed, I felt, was some sort of gazeteer, which pulled together everything we know about Discworld and attached it to some maps.

Please note my rating is from the perspective of a Discworld fan. If you're not, I would strongly recommend working your way through a few of the books first. Otherwise this will simply be bewildering at best.
This is a lovely book. I have some of the other Discworld maps so I'm used to the amount of detail and effort, but here there is such detail in the text too, written in the style of any great quality world atlas. Detailed observations on geography, geology, weather, politics, history and c..more
This is a beautifully done atlas of the Discworld. And it includes a huge map! with insets describing things like thaumaturgical fields..
The presentation is wonderful: a hardcover book in a jacket that includes an elastic to hold it together, and which keeps the separate HUGE map in place so it does not slip out. It's a delight to read, too, whether straight through or at random. All of the separate areas have their own small maps in the text, too, which is fun. (I love maps!) I think all Discwor..more
I liked The Compleat Ankh-Morpork slightly better, but The Compleat Discworld Atlas was still really nice. The Atlas provides amusing and interesting background information to the Discworld novels. Both maps and atlas contain lots of details, but lack a bit of the humor I expect from the Discworld Emporium. Of course the sad circumstances may have played a role in this. Still, the big map alone is well worth it.
This can be regarded as a 'What are they doing now?' for fans of the Discworld books. It gives updated summaries of what's be happening in the locations of the stories going all the way back to 'The Colour of Magic' as they were at the end of 'Raising Steam'. Reading it gave me the impression that Sir Terry was trying to provide his fans with a sense of closure. It includes an updated map of the Discworld.

Fine, for what it is. If you absolutely obsess over Discworld and need every last little bit written about it, it's probably for you. Otherwise, it was okay. No really new info for the typical fan, I'd say. The folding map was cool. The interior maps less so.
Warning this book is set after the events of 'Interesting times' and 'Raising Steam'. An extensive and quite helpful guide to our beloved Discworld, containing info about geography trade traditions and such of each region on the Disc.
Gorgeous and full of 'in-jokes' for lovers of Pratchett's Discworld. It reads like a high-quality RPG manual. :)
